As usual I attended lots of meetings and public engagements. The opener was the Ocean Days Festival at Descanso Bay Regional Park. Divers brought up all kinds of things from the deep to the delight of the children and adults too. There was also a demonstration of how long a single oil tanker really is. We could have hundreds of them in our coastal waters, unless we can convince both the Provincial and Federal governments that this is too risky to assent to.
Next there was a meeting with Sergeant Gibbons of the RCMP. Our discussion centered around community and policing policies on Gabriola.
Nancy Avery, the RDN Financial Administrator retired on June 14th. Nancy will be greatly missed. She has done a great job for many years and I would like to wish her a great retirement with lots of boating.
The annual Ratepayers meeting with the community and the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (formally known as the highways department) produced a good discussion on island needs, better roads, helpfulness of lines on the road, and the need to slow traffic in parts of the village core .
Next up was a visit to GIRO from the RDN Solid Waste Management team. The team was very pleased with the way GIRO is being run and commented on how clean and well organized the operation is, thanks goes to all the hard working staff and volunteers. The RDN will be helping out with long term planning and a site clean up.
On June 21st I met several Olympic and Paralympics athletes at the “Off to London” celebration. One of the athletes was Mike Mason, a high jumper and the son of Carol Mason our RDN CAO. Yes, indeed it’s a small world after all.
National Aboriginal Day featured great First Nations food, dancing, drumming and a good time to make new friends and to visit old friends too.
After all that the RDN and The Islands Trust met and we worked together on a protocol agreement, which had been collecting dust for about 6 years. It will now be completed.
Today I’m off to meet with the Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation followed by a meeting of the City of Nanaimo Parks, Recreation and Culture Commission. On Thursday I’ll be at the Local Islands Trust meeting and then I’ll be taking a weekend break.
Still having fun,
